Practice and Dedication : Brittany Dyer

Let’s open this up with the uncomfortable, standard question: tell us about yourself and a little bit about what you do.

I am a yogi, artist, vegan, and student. I am currently attaining a BFA in Studio Art at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

You’ve been a working artist for quite some time. You’ve worked with Divinemoira Studio specifically for the past few years. How has your art practice change over time?

I would say my practice has become more serious and dedicated over time. I have developed a deeper appreciation and confidence towards my work. I create more than ever and find myself short of time rather than ideas.

What’s your favorite medium to work in?

My primary mediums of choice are photography (film or digital) and oil painting. It is common for me to approach my work in a experimental and manipulative way because I am always striving to create something unique.

Why did you elect to pursue a career in the arts?

Creating is a necessity for me. I have to do it. I have a constant flow of ideas all the time that it sometimes can drive me a bit mad because I do no t have enough time to create everything I would like to.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

I had a good friend that was also a peer of mine pat me on the back when viewing my portfolio. He told me I find beauty in things that may seem so dull to others. I am mindful of the value and shapes that occur naturally in my surroundings. I find inspiration easily from strangers and the environment. My artistic outlook motivates me on a regular basis which fuels my ability to create everyday.

At Divinemoira Studio, we focus on art, inspiration and hope. What inspires you to create your work? What gives you hope?

Any song from Steven Wilson or Chelsea Wolfe instantly produces images in my mind. I can just close my eyes and literally think of a new project to work on. Music is a major influence of mine.

What has been your most profound artistic experience?

I mastered film photography with a guru. It meant the world to me because he has been a huge inspiration to me. It is something I will never forget.

What three artists come to mind that inspire you or your work? Would you like to be compared to them? Why?

Lasse Hoile, Ellen Rogers, and Casey Baugh are huge inspirations of mine. Please don't compare me to them, but please do check them out if you have never heard of them. All are major talents in the contemporary art scene.
