The Many Layers of Mark Pack
WHAT INSPIRED THIS PIECE OF ART?
The basic inspiration behind of my work. Is to replicate what I believe the process nature goes through to make certain objects like rocks. Basically I am working to replicate the process. These paintings are mostly process based painting and it is that process that brings about the end result.
THERE ARE MANY ORGANIZATIONS IN REGION THAT SEEK OUT CREATIVES FOR CONTRIBUTIONS FOR AUCTIONS TO SUPPORT THEIR CAUSE. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INVOLVED WITH DIVINEMOIRA STUDIO AND THE ANGEL BAND PROJECT?
After reading about the purpose behind Angels Band Project, I wanted to show my support because it would help support woman that have been abused recover.
THE MONTH OF APRIL IS DEDICATED TO SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS. THIS YEAR THE CAMPAIGN FOCUSES ON CONSENT. SPECIFICALLY “I ASK.” WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HOW ART CAN MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THIS CAMPAIGN?
Art can help by calling attention to the idea of consent.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST START CREATING ART?
I first started making drawings when I was around the age of 12.
WHAT WAS THE FIRST KIND OF WORK YOU CREATED?
The first kind of work I started to create was imaged figures of some sort. They were mostly based off of popular cartoons at the time.
DO YOU THINK IT TAKES INNATE TALENT TO BE AN ARTIST IN TODAY’S CLIMATE? DO YOU THINK IT’S NECESSARY TO HAVE ACADEMIC TRAINING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN TODAY’S ART MARKET?
Mostly I believe it takes a willingness to work really hard to be an artist. Artist have to be willing to pick themselves up countless times, until they are given an opportunity to show their work. If an artist is not willing to work hard at making opportunities for themselves then all of the talent in the world will not help you. Talent is important but it is not the defining factor.
I do think academic training is important but not necessary. I say this because academic training can give you the tools to think about your work at a high level.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON FORMAL EDUCATION IN ART? HOW DO YOU THINK THAT IMPACTS YOUR WORK? HOW DO YOU THINK THAT IMPACTS YOUR CAREER?
I think formal education can help give you a leg up but not a free ticket in the art world. There are no guarantees.
DO YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF AND/OR YOUR WORK DRIVEN BY THE WORK OF YOUR CONTEMPORARIES?
I am mostly inspired to make work by nature and not by other artists work. I make my work out of wanting to answer questions in my head about the natural world.
HOW DO YOU THINK SELF-CONFIDENCE PLAYS INTO YOUR WORK?
Self-Confidence plays a role in my work by helping me to keep making work when it may not always be rewarded the outside world.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN ART?
I judge success in my art by having a sense that I am making the work that I need to be making. I do not want my sense of worth to be based on outside achievements because they come and go.
WHEN PEOPLE LOOK BACK AT THIS TIME IN ART, WHAT DO YOU HOPE THEY WILL SAY ABOUT YOU?
I hope people will look back at my work and see a person that was driven by an inner voice. An inner voice that is working to answer questions that are of the spirit in nature.
DO YOU FEEL YOU TRUST YOURSELF, YOUR INSTINCTS IN YOUR WORK, EVEN IF OTHERS DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS YOU ARE TRYING TO DO?
MANY PEOPLE ARE DISCOURAGED FROM PURSUING A CAREER IN ART. WAS THERE A TIME WHEN YOU CONSIDERED PATH THAT MIGHT BE EASIER?
WHY WAS IT WORTH PURSUING A CAREER IN VISUAL ART?
I feel that most artists make work out of a feeling that we are called to this. Artists including myself have to reconstruct what it means to have a sense of worth. I say this because the rewards from the outside world may not always be there. I do feel it was worth it though because I have found a way to express the ideas that I am thinking about and share that with others.
DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY AS AN ARTIST?
Yes, I am very interested in trying to express the sublime.
THE JOURNEY OF EACH ARTIST IS DIFFERENT. SOME ARTISTS WANT TO MAKE A STATEMENT. SOME ARE IN A JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY AND ENGAGEMENT. SOME ARE SIMPLY ENGAGED IN THEIR PROCESS. HOW WOULD YOU CLASSIFY YOUR JOURNEY?
My journey as an artist is one of discovery and engagement. I also want to use the process of making art as a part of that journey.
